THE EARLY STARTERS!

8:30 am is too late for certain people. A picture from the start line of our first 'early start' for the full marathon.

We will repeat this experiment in 2019. The idea is to get get everyone to the finish line while the 'craic is still mighty' and enable us to close the course in a shorter space of time. As an added bonus: there is a less pressure to run against the cut-offs. The downside: you do have to forfeit your chance of winning a prize as early starters are 'invisible' to the main field for a while.

Ras Tailteann

Please note the Ras Tailteann will pass through the final 1 km of the marathon route at some stage between 13:10 and 14:10 on Saturday.

This means runner on course to finish 4:30 to 5:30 will note more activity in the final t-junction at Lynhams. Plans are in place to ensure you can cross unimpeded: so simply stay aware and follow marshal instructions.

For those finishing earlier - you can watch the race pass by from the finish line!

Thanks to the runners who came out for today's recce covering the nearly 20 km from the Glendalough Green Cafe to Sallygap. It was another misty one so hopefully these clouds will be long gone come end of May.

the profile from today shows it: the hardest bit of climbing is the first half of the first half (clear as mud?)

THE NEW DISTANCE!

Beginners, long-suffering supporters, speedsters and others who like the look of our race but not the distances - we are glad to announce the Glendalough 3 mile race which will start alongside the half-marathon and covers the first few miles and last half mile of the Glen to Glen Half route - including the scenic run past the upper lake.

Despite a few bumps, the course is 10 metres net downhill so a fast time might even be in the course and we are certain your 3 mile PB needs urgent polishing up!

WHERE DO I STAY?

WHERE DO I STAY?

Glendalough is a popular destination so if you wish to stay over, book earlier rather than later.

Stay in Laragh if you want to stay closest to the finish (we have a shuttle) or Glendalough if you want to stay close to the start (remember to pick up your race pick Friday evening in that case!). Annamoe, Glenmalure, Roundwood, Rathdrum and other surrounding areas will also work if you have a car and just want to be within 10-15 min drive of the start on race day.

There are many many great places to stay from cheap hostel accommodation to hotel rooms, one overview you can see below covering the guest houses and B&Bs. If B&Bs run out don't forget there are also several AirBnBs in the area:

NEW DISTANCE.....SHHH!

We're adding a third event to our race series: we've noticed the many patient supporters standing around and seen the envious glances of those wanting to run by the beautiful lake shore but not willing or able to chance the half-marathon or marathon distance this year!

Well, your chance is coming: the love-child of Lap of the Gap and Glen to Glen, will steep out on it's tender little feet this May.

Keep an eye on this page as we'll post more details and open registration for the 'third wheel' - a short and sweet event which will still give you a taste of Glendalough goodness and few bumps in the road too.

The best thing about this race? You can lean back and relax after a short time and watch the half-marathoners and marathoners finish!

Three of the most common questios we get is: will there be medals, t-shirts and, the all-important, water stations.

The answer is 'yes' to all three - but note medals and t-shirts only to first 100 to register in each event. We can increase this if we get higher numbers before we have to lock down our order of t-shirts and medals, so the earlier you book, the better.

In the meantime: water is for everyone and this is where you will find it!

DOWNHILL FINISH IN 2018

DOWNHILL FINISH IN 2018

Our finish location changes from the Brockagh Centre to the Laragh GAA grounds this year due to a conflict with another event. The GAA grounds have served as the finish and start line for our 2016 and 2017 'Run the Ridge' mountain run.

But fear not - the event will still be EXACTLY marathon (and half-marathon) distance as measured out by Jones counter by an official AAI course measurer. While we will miss the big hall of Brockagh Centre we will make up for it with a nice setup on the GAA grounds and you will have not only the pleasure of finishing among the green mountain scenery of the GAA pitches - you will also avoid the infamous 'School Lane Climb which broke so many hearts in 2016 and 2017.

Instead you will have a fast downhill finish without any 'nasty surprises' at the end and so we expect this year's times to be slightly faster!

what's the plan for 2019? To return to Brockagh - but two and three timers - we will welcome your feedback after the race!

CLEAN COURSE INITIATIVE

CLEAN COURSE INITIATIVE

Our team do their best to leave the 'Lap of the Gap' course in better condition than we found it.

This year we want to go one better as our way of saying 'thank you' to the local community living on the roads and of which we are ourselves part (selfish eh!).

While we can clean up after our own event, the Lap of the Gap course is one of the most popular routes for mountain excursions and several bike races also run over the course (in fact, one on the same day and one the day after our race!).

But more day to day: There is a scourge of left-over coffee cups in County Wicklow - chucked out the window by motorists (and giving poor old Frank and Honest coffee in Roundwood a bad name!) - but it can be helped.

So this year we will not only do the extensive clean-up we do after our race EVERY YEAR, our club members will be bringing small bags with us to collect litter on training runs and recces we do on the course over the coming months ahead of the race. We hope you find the course in a condition Mr Proper could be proud of!

Martin Lynch Travel and Tours from Arklow perform the criticial task of shuttling runners from registration in Laragh to the start in Glendalough.

From 2018 onwards, we are also putting in place a shuttle service from Sandyford in Dublin to Laragh for those who cannot make our race by car.

http://martinlynchtravelandtours.com/

Due to demand we are putting a bus service in place from Sandyford LUAS in South Dublin to Laragh. Expected departure will be 7 am so you have plenty of time to be there ahead of race start.

Final details are being worked out on this 'experiment' which we hope is of great value to everyone who doesn't have a car or rental. Please share your feedback below to help us and our 'coach partner' Martin Lynch Travle and Tours!

Those taking the bus can use the St Kevin's Bus Service from Laragh at 17:45 for €12 for the trip back to Dublin (or even better stay over!) and you'll be back in South Dublin around 18:40 and central Dublin 19:0.
